Intestines and Stomach Functions
The digestive system digests food, absorbs nutrients and excretes waste. Digestion and absorption of food provide energy required for the body. Vitamins, water and inorganic salts can be directly absorbed by the body. Proteins, fats and carbohydrates are to be broken down into smaller molecules before they can be absorbed and used. This process is called digestion. Those molecules not absorbed by the digestive track are excreted from the body in the form of faeces via the large intestine.
The whole digestive process is the combination of different chemical reaction that acts on food eaten reducing it to building blocks of nutrients for absorption and use by the body.
Every piece of food is composed of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. These must be broken down into their relative compounds in order for the body to use them. This is the chemistry of digestion.

Both the zang and the fu organ networks depend primarily on the spleen and the stomach. All food we eat enters the stomach and is then transported by the spleen, just like the dirt on earth [is distributed by wind and water to nourish all life forms]. It should be pointed out, however, that the spleen/stomach’s capability of transforming the food is actually dependent on the two essential qualities of fire and water. The spleen and stomach cannot do this by themselves. When fire is in a state of excess, the spleen and stomach will be dry; when water is in a state of excess, the spleen and stomach will be damp. Either situation will cause the hundred diseases to arise.
What is Dampness? Why is it Bad For Our Health?
Dampness is considered to be the cause of many illnesses such as high cholesterol, cancer, metabolic disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, allergies, etc.
Individuals with a dampness condition often have sluggish energy and gain weight easily. The tongue is often puffy with teeth mark indentations on the sides, very moist looking and with a greasy looking tongue coating.
Damp is a yin pathogen that impairs yang and easily causes qi stagnation. Damp impairs Spleen yang that leads to distention and fullness in the epigastrium and abdomen, poor appetite, loose stools and generalized edema.
Dampness in the meridians/channels manifests as pain, swelling and heaviness of the joints.
Dampness in the skin manifests mainly as eczema, puffiness and oozing lesions.
